What are the symptoms of a low functioning gallbladder? - Biliary dyskinesia

Biliary dyskinesia is a condition where the gallbladder functions lesser than normal. This condition can be related to existing gallbladder inflammation. This can occur in older children as well as in adults. Some of the symptoms of biliary dyskinesia include abdominal pain which typically occurs after heavy meals, chronic periodic pain (biliary colic), nausea, vomiting, anorexia (poor appetite), etc. The functioning of the gallbladder can be evaluated by using a diagnostic tool called a HIDA scan.

Treatment for biliary dyskinesia is initiated when the patient experiences the above said symptoms and is diagnosed using a HIDA scan. The only treatment available to address biliary dyskinesia is gallbladder removal surgery or cholecystectomy. The surgery is mostly done using the laparoscopic method. Very rarely the gallbladder surgeon might want to do open surgery. This is done only when the gallbladder inflammation has become complicated and an open method is required to address the complexity completely.
